S&P suffers year's biggest loss as Greek deal falters

The S&P 500 posted its biggest daily percentage decline thus far in 2012 on Friday after an about-face on Greece's long-awaited debt deal ended a five-week streak of gains for equities.

All but one of the 30 Dow components ended lower while all 10 S&P sectors fell, with cyclical sectors such as energy, financials and materials the biggest losers.

The CBOE Volatility index (:.VIX), often referred to as Wall Street's "fear index," jumped 11.6 percent, its biggest percentage rise in three months.

Investors have anxiously awaited a bailout package for Greece so the country might avoid a messy default.

An agreement finally came this week but almost immediately ran into problems when European leaders called for additional austerity measures and some Greek lawmakers said they would not support the deal.

Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said the nation needs to reach a decision within days on accepting the terms of a bailout.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said during a testimony before the Senate Budget Committee that the possibility of a sudden fiscal crisis has increased. He warned that interest rates can soar quickly if investors lose confidence in the ability of the government to manage its fiscal policy. Making no mention of last week's strong jobs report, Bernanke instead said that the labor market has a long way to go before it will return to normal. Bernanke essentially reiterated the thoughts on fiscal policy that he had presented to lawmakers the previous week.

"The market is just chopping around, directionless and currently without catalyst, either bullish or bearish," said Lou Brien, economic strategist at DRW Trading.

Nifty outlook for week ending 10 Feb 12

The Nifty declined to the low of 5,076.7 before closing with aplomb above 5,300. The index has now moved well clear of its 200-day moving average at 5,193. This up-move shows no signs of letting up and we are fed up of looking for points from which it can reverse lower.

So we restrict to identifying next short-term targets. These are 5,400 and 5,432. Since the index is past the 38.2 per cent retracement of the down-move from 6,338 peak, 50 per cent retracement will be the next important hurdle for this index.

Medium-term target on a close above 5,432 is 5,645.

The index will receive support at 5219 5,090, 5,015 and 4,916 in the upcoming sessions. The 200 DMA at 5,193 and recent trough at 5,076 will also provide interim support to the index. Traders can buy in declines as long as it holds above 4916. Close below this level will mean that a more serious correction is progress.

U.S. Stocks Close Marginally Lower on Eurozone Debt Jitters

Asian markets are trading on an average 0.6% up same the sgx Nifty up by 37 Point to 5142 at 7.30 AM ..expecting choppy session ahead .
Stocks fell Monday, but finished the day well off of intraday lows, as investors warily eyed a possible resolution on Greek debt talks and soaring Portuguese borrowing costs.

Portuguese bond yields were moving higher, sparking concerns that the country would also need a second bailout like Greece. Yields on the ten-year bond had surged more than 200 basis points to 17.26% Monday.

"At this rate, Portugal is going to move from the back to front burner in very, very short order," wrote Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist with BTIG, in a note.

European Union leaders meet in Brussels Monday for their first summit of 2012 to finalize steps for a rescue fund of $661 billion to be up and running later this year. Greece and its private creditors, meanwhile, signaled they would agree on a deal in which investors will accept a bigger cut on their government debt holdings. The two sides are "close" to an agreement following three days of talks in Athens, according to Bloomberg.

Only when the debt swap in Greece is resolved can the country receive a second bailout from the International Monetary Fund and other European creditors, which would help Greece avoid a default. The Greece government is under growing pressure to work out a deal given that it faces a €14.5 billion bond payment on March 20. Also, before the country gets fresh funding, Germany is insisting that Athens give up some control over its budget policy.

In Europe, French bank shares were pressured after President Nicolas Sarkozy said he would impose a financial-transaction tax. A reading on consumer sentiment in the eurozone rose less than expected, according to the European Commission in Brussels. Germany's DAX closed down 1.2% while London's FTSE lost 1.1%.

Global stocks dip as U.S. GDP falls short; euro rises

World stocks fell on Friday on news the U.S. economy grew more slowly than expected in the last quarter of 2011, while the euro rose on hopes of an imminent deal on Greece's debt that could help avert a disorderly default.

The United States, the world's biggest economy, grew at an annualized 2.8 percent pace late last year, the fastest quarterly rate in 1-1/2 years. But it fell short of economists' forecast, fueling worries about U.S. growth in 2012 and bets that the Federal Reserve would need to provide more help.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke this week painted a picture of an economy mired in slow growth, and the Fed delayed the timing for an interest rate hike until at least late 2014. He also suggested the U.S. central bank is open to buying more bonds in a bid to stimulate borrowing and investments.

"Today's GDP numbers, while positive, indicate that the economy is not really doing all that well, and Chairman Bernanke's extreme policy may be in fact what's needed," said Michael Sheldon, chief market strategist at RDM Financial in Westport, Connecticut.
